History of Linapacan, Palawan: From Pre-Colonial to Modern Times

The Municipality of Linapacan, nestled between Busuanga and mainland Palawan, is a place where tradition, faith, and resilience have shaped its people for centuries. Long before the coming of colonizers, the islands were home to the Tagbanua and Cuyonon, who thrived through fishing, farming, and trade with their neighbors in Busuanga and Culion. Their culture was preserved through oral traditions, most notably the Dumaracol epic of Barangay Pical, which told of courage, kinship, and the defense of the community. This tale became a symbol of the people’s strength and identity.

The Arrival of the Spaniards and the Story of Reina Capan

When the Spaniards arrived in the 17th century, they were guided by footprints along the shore until they reached a hut, where they encountered a woman named Capan, the wife of a local chieftain. Out of respect, they referred to her as Reina Capan, with “Reina” meaning “Queen” in Spanish.

In recording local names, the Spaniards often adapted them according to their own pronunciation and writing system. Through this process, the name “Capan,” associated with the respected figure they called Reina Capan, was incorporated into their records and gradually written as Linacapan. The prefix “Lina-” may have emerged from the way the name was heard, spoken, or transcribed in Spanish documentation, reflecting common colonial practices of modifying indigenous names.

With the passage of time, the spelling evolved into Linapacan, which is the name used today.

Spanish Rule and the Augustinian Recollects

During Spanish rule, Linapacan was integrated into the Province of Calamianes and fell under the religious jurisdiction of the Diocese of Cebu. Missionary work in Northern Palawan was led by the Augustinian Recollects, who introduced Christianity while adapting it to local culture.

As Palawan faced constant threats from Moro raiders, the Spaniards built a chain of fortifications to protect Christianized settlements. Among them stood the Caseledan Fort in Barangay Maroyogroyog, constructed between 1683 and 1690 of stone, with a chapel at its heart.

It became both a place of worship and a bastion of defense for the islanders. In 1738, Governor-General Fernando Valdés Tamón described the fort in his Relación de las Islas Filipinas. In 1753, a detailed drawing—Figura del Fuerte del Pueblo de Linacapan—was preserved in the Archivo General de Indias in Seville, Spain, confirming its place in history.

Along with other strongholds in Taytay, Culion, and Cuyo, Caseledan Fort anchored Linapacan in the broader Spanish defense system of Northern Palawan.

Linapacan Under American Rule

Under American rule, Linapacan remained a remote part of Coron, where life revolved around farming and fishing.

During World War II, Japanese forces reached Palawan, and although Linapacan was spared from direct destruction, its people endured scarcity and hardship, surviving through the strength of their environment and unity.

The Birth of the Municipality of Linapacan

A new chapter opened on January 12, 1954, when Republic Act No. 1020, authored by Congressman Gaudencio E. Abordo, was signed into law, separating Linapacan from Coron and establishing it as a new municipality.

Ten barangays—San Miguel, Maroyogroyog, New Colaylayan, San Nicolas, Cabunlawan, Nangalao, Calibangbangan, Pical, Barangonan, and Decabaitot—were united under this act, with San Miguel chosen as the seat of government.

On June 12, 1954, Independence Day, Linapacan’s municipal government was formally inaugurated, with Jose O. Cadlaon serving as its first elected mayor.

This moment signaled the community’s independence not only in governance but also in identity.

Growth and Development

In the decades that followed, progress was gradual but steady. Schools and health centers were established, including San Miguel National High School and the first Rural Health Center, while agriculture remained the backbone of daily life.

After the 1986 EDSA Revolution, Mayor Rafael D. Rodriguez, Sr. was appointed. Not long after, Republic Act No. 6680 sought to rename the municipality as G.E. Abordo, in honor of the congressman who had authored its creation.

Yet in a plebiscite held on May 21, 1994, the people firmly chose to keep the historic name Linapacan, preserving its cultural ties to Reina Capan.

Linapacan Today

Today, Linapacan is celebrated across the world for its crystalline seas, hailed as among the clearest waters on Earth. Tourists come to marvel at its hidden lagoons, white-sand beaches, and untouched coral reefs.

Yet for the people of Linapacan, its true beauty lies deeper. It lives in the wisdom of the Dumaracol epic, in the stones of Caseledan Fort preserved in Spanish archives, and in the name Linapacan itself, born of respect for a woman called Reina Capan.

From the footprints that first led to its name, to the fortifications that guarded its people, to the creation of the municipality in 1954, Linapacan’s history is a story of resilience, heritage, and transformation.

Its journey reflects the strength of a community that has safeguarded its culture across centuries while embracing the promise of the future—a history as radiant and enduring as the seas that surround it.
